Frequently asked questions
How is UK take-home pay calculated? +
Take-home pay is gross pay minus income tax, employee National Insurance, any student loan repayments and your pension contribution. This calculator uses 2026/27 (6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027) rates, with 2025/26 available too.
What is the personal allowance? +
The standard personal allowance is £12,570. It reduces by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000 and is gone at £125,140, which creates an effective 60% rate in that band.
Is Scotland different? +
Yes. Scotland has six income tax bands (19%, 20%, 21%, 42%, 45%, 48%). National Insurance is the same across the UK.
Salary sacrifice or net pay pension: what is the difference? +
Salary sacrifice reduces your pay before tax and National Insurance. A net pay arrangement reduces taxable pay only, so you save tax but not NI.
Can I use my tax code? +
Yes. Open More options and enter a code such as 1257L, BR, D0, 0T, K475 or S1257L. Scottish (S) prefixes switch to Scottish bands.
How accurate is it? +
It uses official GOV.UK rates and is covered by automated tests. It assumes steady pay across the year; real payslips can differ slightly because of cumulative PAYE, benefits in kind and rounding.
