How hourly pay becomes a salary

Annual pay is your hourly rate multiplied by the hours you work each week and the weeks you work each year (52 by default). Tax and National Insurance are then calculated on that annual figure, exactly as they would be for a salaried employee.

Using the hours and weeks fields

Change hours per week for part-time work, and weeks per year if you do not work all 52 (for example term-time work). The results update instantly, and the hourly equivalent card shows your net pay per hour.

Overtime and bonuses

Open More options to add overtime hours at a chosen multiplier. The overtime card shows how much of those extra hours you actually keep after tax and NI.

Frequently asked questions

Figures use official GOV.UK 2026/27 rates. See the methodology.

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary? +

Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week and then by 52. For example £18 an hour for 37.5 hours a week is £35,100 a year before tax.

What is the National Living Wage? +

The National Living Wage is the legal minimum hourly rate for workers aged 21 and over. Check GOV.UK for the current figure; this calculator works for any rate you enter.

Does overtime get taxed more? +

No separate rate applies, but extra pay can push income into a higher band, so the marginal rate on overtime can be higher than on your basic pay.
