The pro-rata formula

Actual salary = FTE salary x (your weekly hours / full-time hours) x (weeks worked / 52). A £40,000 FTE role at 22.5 of 37.5 hours pays £24,000.

Term-time workers

If you work fewer than 52 weeks, enter the weeks you are paid for. Many employers then spread pay evenly across 12 months.

Tax on a lower income

Part-time pay often sits mostly inside your personal allowance and basic-rate band, so the effective tax rate is lower than on the FTE salary.

Frequently asked questions

Figures use official GOV.UK 2026/27 rates. See the methodology.

How do I calculate part-time pay from a full-time salary? +

Multiply the full-time salary by your hours divided by full-time hours. For 3 days of a 5-day week, multiply by 0.6.

Is holiday included in pro-rata? +

Most employers include holiday in the pro-rata salary; term-time contracts may use a different holiday method.
