The SMP formula
For the first 6 weeks you get 90% of your average weekly earnings. For the next 33 weeks you get the flat statutory rate or 90% of average earnings, whichever is lower.
Average weekly earnings
Employers use the average of the 8 weeks up to the end of your qualifying week. If you only know your annual salary, dividing by 52 gives a close estimate.
Enhanced pay and Maternity Allowance
Many employers pay more than the statutory minimum. If you do not qualify for SMP, you may get Maternity Allowance instead.
