Student loan repayments: thresholds and what you will pay

You repay a share of what you earn above a threshold, not a share of what you owe. That makes repayments easy to work out once you know your plan.

Which plan am I on?

Plan 1: you started before September 2012 in England or Wales, or studied in Northern Ireland. Plan 2: you started between September 2012 and July 2023 in England, or from September 2012 in Wales. Plan 4: you took your loan in Scotland. Plan 5: you started in England from August 2023. The postgraduate loan is for Master's and doctoral loans and is repaid alongside any other plan.

How it affects your marginal rate

Above the threshold, a basic-rate taxpayer loses 20% income tax, 8% National Insurance and 9% student loan on each extra pound: 37% in total. With a postgraduate loan as well it is 43%.

Repayments stop when the loan is repaid or written off. Because repayments depend only on income, overpaying voluntarily is worth it only if you expect to clear the loan before it is written off.

Frequently asked questions

Are repayments taken before or after tax? +

They are calculated on your gross pay above the threshold and taken from your pay alongside tax and National Insurance.

Does salary sacrifice reduce repayments? +

Yes. Salary sacrifice lowers the pay that repayments are calculated on, so pension contributions made that way reduce your repayment.

What if I have two plans? +

With two undergraduate plans you pay 9% above the lower threshold, split between them. A postgraduate loan is extra: 6% above its own threshold.
