How overtime is calculated

Your hourly rate is annual pay divided by hours and weeks worked. Overtime hours are multiplied by your chosen rate (such as time and a half) and added to gross pay.

Why you keep less than you expect

Overtime is taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, and CPP and EI also apply until you reach their yearly maximums.

Provinces differ

Overtime thresholds and premiums are set by each province, but the tax on the pay is calculated the same way.
